Reserves v Rotherham (H) totesport league cup Weds 10/11/10

Tue Nov 09, 2010 8:38 pm

Match kicks off at 2pm on Wednesday at the Banks's's.

This is a competitive cup fixture (group round), not a kickabout! If you've got nothing else on, go down and support the lads - admission is free! :D

Wow! 3-0 after 27 minutes......maybe these boys should be starting on Saturday??!! I hope CH is watching.

Sounds like Nicholls, Paterson, Grigg and Bowerman are doing well :D

Still 20 minutes left too!

Hat trick for Nicholls, 2 for Bowerman, 1 for Grigg and 1 for Forde so far.

I see that we had Andy Butler playing as a triallist.

Nothing lost in checking him out.
Right age - 27
Centre Back

Turned down a 3 year contract offer at Scunny to go to Huddersfield a couple years back.

ye i went to this today .. we won 7-0 but it really was a bad rotherham side... the manager was devoid of any ideas and just sat there as it went right over his head.I expected Jimmy mullen to be there for them but guess he was liein low :D

Definitely worth a look.
Mind you, I've been impressed with most of Hutchings' recent signings on paper.

the indian kid .. Benning was ver good at left back... Paterson was ok to. Butler was solid at the back. Will Grigg was ok often had some poor finishing if im honest but ran his socks off

Nicholls was the star man with a stella 2nd half performance.

Why was Bevan subbed at half time? Johnny Brain was stuck in traffic so Bevan got a start..... but then he was subbed, why?

Is it only I that finds this strange... is Bevan really really bad?

I didn't bother posting a report yesterday as several others have posted the gist of the game, above. However, here goes, briefly:-

Walsall 7 0 Rovrum

Attendance:- unknown, but I would estimate just over the 100 mark.

Saddlers (4-4-2)

David Bevan (Jonny Brain, 45 min.)

Ben George
Alex Hickman
Andy Butler (Tom Hayes, 67 min.)
Malvind Benning

Alex Nicholls
Sean Geddes (capt.)
Aaron Forde
Jamie Paterson

Will Grigg (Joey Butlin, 72 min.)
George Bowerman

Unused substitutes
Jake Jones
Jack Cresswell
Connor Deards

Manager:- Martin O'Connor

A detailed report can be found on the club website:-

Now, I do not, in any way, wish to lessen or understate the achievements of the Reserves in this game, but it has to be said that this was a VERY poor Rotherham team. To think that this was the back-up to a (successful) Football League team is amazing. A couple of them resembled the Fleetwood penalty-taker - shall we say, er, a little "chunky" :D . Jimmy Muddle was there but not in direct charge of the team. I shudder to think what his report to Ronnie Moore was like!

Both teams fielded, as expected, very young sides with the one Saddlers exception being 27 year-old triallist, Andy Butler, at centre-back. It goes without saying that he had very little to do and the club will have learned next to nothing from this game.

Walsall should have won by a much bigger score (well into double figures) such was their superiority. No-one played badly but this was not a learning experience from the Walsall point of view - apart, that is, from profligate finishing! Credit to Nicholls for his hat-trick (but not for being cautioned for a "handbags" incident, in the first half) but the goal of the match came from Forde with a beautiful curling shot into the top corner to complete the scoring.

A special mention for Jonny Brain(less). All day, BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC WM were broadcasting about the traffic hold-up on the M6, South-bound carriageway, North of Junction 9 (Bescot). You would have thought that any-one with a functioning brain cell, travelling South to Junction 9, from, say, Macclesfield or that area, would have got off the motorway at an earlier junction and used the trunk roads, wouldn't you? :?
