Walsall Youth 2 1 Grimsby Town Youth
Sorry - can't give a match report (only got there at half-time - meetings, meeting, meetings) and not even a list of players (no team sheets left). However, it was still an entertaining half, played out in persistent drizzle on a wet and slippy pitch. The young Mariners were in control of the opening stages of the second half but, gradually, Dean Smith's lads pulled themselves back into the game.
Just as it looked as if the home side would score, Grimsby broke away to take the lead in the 82nd minute. It had an element of good luck as both Walsall centre-backs, in turn, lost their footing and slipped on the greasy surface while trying to jump up to head the ball. In fairness to the Grimsby player, he kept his balance and finished it well.
The super Saddlers were back on level terms, in the 90th minute, via the penalty-spot (scored by no.9), after the referee (rightly) awarded a penalty-kick for hand-ball. The drama was complete, in the first minute of stoppage time, with a superbly struck shot (scored by no.11), worthy of winning any game.

Goalscorers for Walsall: Connor Deards with the penalty, Jake Jones with the top-drawer 20 yard belter.

Get well soon to Jonny Haynes who was stretchered off. Done his knee in apparently. I won't laugh when I see the crutches, honestly

Done his medial ligament and out for 6 weeks. Bad news just as he was making in-roads. All the best for a quick recovery mate.
