Reserves v. Port Fail - 11/11/09

Wed Nov 11, 2009 3:48 pm

Walsall v. Port Vale
played at Bescot Stadium

Saddlers (4-3-1-2)
Tim Cooney

Rory Wood
Alex Hickman
Darryl Westlake
Louis Keenan

Peter Till
Josh O'Keefe
Sam Adkins (71 min - Sean Geddes)

Will Grigg

Sam Parkin
Alex Nicholls (76 min - Jamie Paterson)

Unused Substitutes
James Wren (gk)
Richard Davies
Jordan McCourt

Manager:- Martin O'Connor

Goal Log:-
24 min. - 1-0 - good persistence by Grigg (called "Wilfred" by O'Connor!) set up an easy chance which Nicholls converted.
44 min. - 1-1 - Vale equalise with their first chance of the match as Anthony Malbon runs on to a flick-on, turns Westlake and coolly slots the ball home.
70 min - 1-2 - David Howland rounds Keenan to put the visitors ahead with a fine shot fro, the corner of the penalty-area.
73 min - 1-3 - disaster for the Saddlers when a long shot from left-back James Beeston is flicked in by Danny Glover.
79 min - 1-4 - worse to follow as the hapless Cooney gifts an early Christmas present to Glover which he accepts.
85 min - 1-5 - rout completed with an Andrew Siribour header.

Comments:-
Two young teams with the Saddlers looking the better side in the first half. The second half opened in the same vein with Parkin and Nicholls going close in the first 12 minutes.
Walsall's teenage back four were competent, despite the score. Goalkeeper not very commanding. The midfield was anonymous and over-run - why did we sign Till and O'Keefe?. The strike force was ineffective despite their hard work.

It's no use dominating possession if you can't score. Vale gave an object lesson in how to convert fewer chances.

Pedagogue - Do you know why the goalkeeper from Hull (Oakley?) did not play? Has he gone back?

PS Thanks for the report

Till & O'keefe no good against Division 2 reserve side - very worrying.

Mind you, Till was a Divison 2 reserve when we signed him!!

If they cant get motivated in a reserve game,to try and impress, then they should stay there and rot.

Hmm, for me only Till was up for it and at least kept going to the bitter end. It was alarming how we collapsed in the second half during which Parkin spent most of the time arguing with Alex Nichols and Sam Adkins, when he wasn't missing a couple of chances created by Till.

The youth team have lost their last couple of games after being in front and the defence today was basically the youth team's defence with the exception of Westlake playing at centre back. Tim Cooney's indecision seemed to spread to the whole of the back 4 and every time Vale attacked it looked like another goal was on the cards.

I hope it was a one off but the performance of Sam Adkins was disappointing and dont get me started on Parkin. I missed the start and Alex's goal but no one enhanced the chances of a recall to the first team. Would have liked to have seen Richard Davies brought on.

I read "4-3-1-2" and it set a shudder down my spine.

The match report didn't make me feel much better either. :(
