oh dear!
Rhys Weston needs to have a good look at himself. Maximum fine I'd have thought.

We were always going to be up against it with ten men, i'm sure that it would of been a comfortable win if it was not for sending off. Our Carling cup record recently has been shocking anyway

That's rather disappointing - a comfortable game until the sending off.
Three yellows and a red does rather take the shine off a promising start.
I think these young players will be getting plenty of chances at this rate.

When will we ever get a cup run again!!! Many of my happiest saddlers moments hav come in the cup and in recent history we seem to drop at the first hurdle every time.

On the positive side - We've got more chance of a better run in the Tinpot, and more glamour with a run in the FA Cup compared to this mickey mouse competition. :D

Re: Accrington Stanley (A) Carling Cup 1st Round Tuesday 11/8/09
Weston was only talking the other day about his stop start beginning to last season with injuries/suspensions. Late summer getaway Rhys?
The early signs are very similar to recent seasons, play well first half and then get railroaded second. As much as I have faith and support in Hutch that usually points to one thing, and one thing only, a manager that struggles to adapt to opposition changes.
Mmmm, Saturday will be interesting.

You cant have players sent off in the first half under any circumstances, whatever the opposition.
Very disappointing.
Back to square one.

accy mullered us 2nd half, if they had not been so poor they would have had a hatfull. westons sending off was debatable to say the least. even the stewards said he got the ball. after that i didnt even see us have a shot or a decent attack. apart from that i had a blinding night, the barmaid in the crown (and the comnpany) made it worthwhile, i said at 7.45 we should of stayed there :D

Re: Accrington Stanley (A) Carling Cup 1st Round Tuesday 11/8/09
We only won on Saturday at Brighton thanx to an own goal
And we've got knocked out the cup in the first round by a team in a lower division than us, in a match where we only score one goal, and had a player sent off in the first half. Same old Walsall, conceeding a losing goal in injury time.
I'm Affraid Lads and lasses, WE AM GOOOING DOWN!!!!
WE AM SHITE!

Desperately disappointing after Saturday's success. How on earth do we keep on managing to fall at the first hurdle in cup competitions, and so often to inferior (on paper at least) opposition?

Re: Accrington Stanley (A) Carling Cup 1st Round Tuesday 11/8/09
What worries me is the lack of depth and experience in our squad. Ince, Sansara, Hughes, Bradley and Till weren't in the squad tonight (the outfield players all being under 23) but we're really going to struggle if we have to rely on the kids this season. Our bench tonight consisted of Deeney (21) along with O'Keefe (20), Davies (19), Westlake (18), Adkins (18), Grigg (18) and Cooney (17).

Re: Accrington Stanley (A) Carling Cup 1st Round Tuesday 11/8/09
just got back. That was very disapointing! Thought that Mannie Smith was our best player, though it wasnt hard to look better than most of the others. Gilmartin also did ok for most of the match.

no idea geoff, but we were inferior in every department after weston was off, they murdered us. at no point after the dubious sending off did i have the feeling this was going to be a heroic performance, we were cack

Re: Accrington Stanley (A) Carling Cup 1st Round Tuesday 11/8/09
Well, that was very depressing. And I'm not just talking about spending two hours on an uncovered terrace peering through the kind of persistent drizzle that Lancashire mill towns now seem to manufacture instead of cotton.
We looked entirely comfortable early on and it was no surprise when Nicholls opened the scoring - sticking out a leg to divert a back post free kick past the keeper. Stanley looked every inch the League Two relegation favourites and a gentle midweek work out looked assured.
Enter Rhys Weston. His first sliding tackle was bad enough and deserved a yellow. The second should have been a straight red. Bizarrely, he got to the ball with plenty of time to spare but then seemed to delay the challenge so that he could clean the man out along with the ball. Utterly idiotic. Both tackles took place in exactly the same spot - in front of the dug outs with no danger apparent.
Even after the sending off we looked relatively comfortable but the second half was a different story. Stanley were hardly all over us but a fatal inability to clear our lines led to the equaliser and then a mistake by Mattis let Mullin snatch a winner. In fact Mattis was probably our best player along with Mannie Smith. I'm afraid I'm not convinced by Roberts and Steve Jones was entirely anonymous.
And so our appalling cup record continues. More worryingly - and as several people have already pointed out further up the thread - the squad still seems to lack depth. A situation that will soon be exposed if the few senior players that we have got let us down as badly as Weston did tonight.
