What a nice day out for a change, a 45min drive up the A1, a couple of pints, a great 2nd half (I'm ignoring the first, reasons to be explained) and a nice drive back.
Performance was literally a game of two halves, to use a cliche.
1st half - Boring, two very poor teams, no real attempts on goal. Our first 'effort' came in the 40th minute, with the fairly influential Osborn firing just wide. Willock hit the bar for them with a good effort before that as well. Neither team really looked like they wanted to win. You'd have thought both teams had safety assured.
2nd half - Pretty much one way traffic. No tactical changes, but a change in tempo. We seemed to step it up a gear, although I think this was partly down to them being slightly more adventurous and giving space. The main key was Standing and Surman. Both were quiet in the first half, but came to life in the 2nd half and ran the show in my view. Standing hit the bar from a free kick, there were a couple of scrambles around the goal.
First goal came from a 'Boro corner that hit the first man, Wrack, who hit it into space on the halfway. Joachim picked it up, turned and ran, going past a couple of blokes to the edge of the box, rolled it across to Standing who ran 2/3 of the pitch to support him, he stopped it and hit a stunning 20 yard rasper past Tyler. Great finish.
2nd goal was some nice play, a ball switched from right central position to Wright out on the left wing, yes, left wing. He kept it in play, played it to Perpetuini, he rolled a beautiful ball inside the full back for Surman to make a great run onto, his dinked cross took a little deflection to the back post where Wracky hammered in from 6 yards. Noticeable 60 yard run from Anthony Gerrard to join in the celebrations in front of the Walsall fans.
2nd half was very good football, very good indeed. First half we won't mention.
Oakes - Little to do, pushed Willocks shot onto the bar, sound.
Pead - My joint MOTM, looked very impressive at right back. I really like the look of him.
Perpetuini - Did his job, fairly safe and solid but not spectacular.
Roper - Won a lot of headers, defended like he does.
Gerrard - Quieter game as he didn't have a lot to do, what he did he did well.
Osborn - My MOTM personally, as he and Pead were the two that played for 90 minutes, rather than 45 minutse. He blossoms in this 4-5-1, as he has options all around him. Played some gorgeous balls inside the full back at times, always around for an option. Very good.
Wrack - Anonymous first half, okay 2nd half, still think he should greater responsibility on the ball.
Wright - Quiet first half, livelier 2nd half on the left wing. Made a fool of Kanu on more than 1 occasion.
Surman - Looked asleep in the first half, fantastic 2nd half.
Standing - Tried but didn't quite get going in the first 45, superb in the 2nd 45. The movement of he and Surman was superb.
Joachim - Worked hard for the cause, created the first goal with some determined running and hard work. Won a lot of headers, but was very isolated during the first half.
When was the last time we won two successive away matches, anybody know?
I'm not getting carried away as the first half was poor, but the 2nd half was superb. Ossie's role really gives a lot of freedom to Standing and Surman and they showed their confidence in the 2nd half.
Well done Merse, keep it going please.

Bloody hell, Stu. Were his laces double tied or just singly tied ? I've never known anybody remember each details with such clarity
I'm usually going so mental when we score half the time I can't even remember who scored it

Agree entirely with Stu. I thought we played extremely well 2nd half & could/should have had more than 2. I thought Osborne just shaded MOM from Joachim, who worked his socks off all afternoon. Standing & Surman were outstanding 2nd half. My only disagreement would be about Pead. Although i thought he defended well, he should be getting forward a lot more when we are on top.
Just heard Merson say he wished he was playing next Saturday!!!!! I think he night just be learning something ???
Up the Saddlers - Best day out ive had for a long while
