Bournemouth (A) J P Trophy 1st Round Tuesday 4/9/07.

Normally would'nt be bothered if we get knocked out to be honest.

But we need a win from somwhere , and a clean sheet .

I want Walsall to win every match.

This season we are unlikely to be in with a chance of promotion, and I do not think that we will long be in the relegation places, so the cup competitions are really all we have to make the season memorable. A good run in the paint cup would be very welcome.

Personally, I think the last thing we need at the moment is a long midweek trip to Bournemouth to play in a no-mark competition in front of 1,500 fans. That said, if we can grind out a win from somewhere, it would do wonders for our (and by that I mean both fans' and players') confidence going into the Vale game on Saturday.

Other than blind optimism, what makes you think that?

I'm not quite sure how seriously we should take this game. Do we experiment a bit with the kids, keeping the players for Saturday fresh and focused on what is a more important game? Or do we go all out for a win which, if we do, great for confidence? However, if we really go for it and still lose then it will be another kick in the teeth for our confidence.

Personally I'd give Bossu a game in goal to put some pressure on Clayton, the back 4 of Weston, Gerrard, Dann and Boertein need to stop leaking goals and for that they need understanding and for that they need match time, so I'd go with that. I'd play two out and out wingers in Ishy and Sonko, I'd give Bradley another run in midfield alongside Wrack and rest Dobson (I know we're away but in the cup what have we really got to lose). I'd also give Deeney another game and I'd be really tempted to throw Nicholls up there with him to make sure we've got Butler and Mooney for Saturday (providing their both fit).

Being the eternal optimist I'm gonna go for 0-2 with Deeney and Nicholls, a solid performance giving DD a real selection headache for Saturday.

UTS!!!

[Edited: This is all nonsense as I've just seen the 'Problems with Team Selection' thread and at least 3 of these players can't play tomorrow. Will still win 2-0 though :D ]

Well considering it looks like a very long hard season in the league, it would be nice to have a distraction and a nice trip to Wembley. So I hope DD takes it seriously.

However the way we have started, 3-0 Bournemouth. With all three goals scored by our own players.

A narrow 1-0 defeat and another first-round exit from a cup competition.

I hope we get a home draw sooner or later in a cup competition as the free ticket to the first home cup match in my season ticket booklet will be useless!

I'm surprised some loony critics haven't suggested that Boner has paid the tournament organisers to ensure we're drawn away in all competitions so he doesn't have to give free season tickets away.

Fella I used to work with is a Cherries fan, doesn't think they'll put out a full strength side tonight, even said they might throw a few kids in.

Don't see a full side being put out. I'd imagine Anderton, Garry & Cooper will be rested and he might well draft a couple of others in. Vokes (same accent as me) is away on Wales u-21 duty. If I was asked to guess, I'd say it could be something like this.

Moss
Telfer - Young - Gowling - Pearce
Gradel - Hollands - Christophe - O'Connor (maybe Cummings?)
Bradbury (or Pitman) - Kuffour (or Pitman)

He might even chuck a couple of the younger ones in (McQuoid, Partington, Bartley). Certain Young will play though. I think it's going to be a very long hard season. We can't seem to get our midfield in front of our forwards and our full backs in front of our midfield at any point which means that the opposition just have to sit back and keep possesion then angle the ball in at Begovic who misses it completely and they tap the ball into the empty net.

Good chance for us then. We need a win from somewhere to lift confidence so I reckon we'll want to go with as close to a full side as possible. Only players I'd rest are Ince (just to give Bossu a game) and Butler (he needs to be nursed through this part of the season). I realise that I'd totally forgotten Dobson with my teams on other threads, but I'd keep him in there too in the absence of Sonner. Unfortunately with injuries this probably still means a few changes from Saturday.

Anyway, we can't lose this game or I'll only have one more chance of a free cup game on my season ticket.

The BBC is reporting , Butler may be rested tonight, and Mooney is struggling to recover from a calf strain.

I'm torn whether I want to see them win or not.

The league is so much more important, but if we do win momentum will gather.

Hopefully...
