Solihull Moors 6/8/07

Sun Aug 05, 2007 10:19 am

Does anyone know the turnstile price for this one? I had a look on the OS and there was nothing (as yet!) and the Soilhull Moors site (basically under construction!) only has the regular season ticket prices (£9 for an adult!! ) which I'm hoping is the same as for a pre-season game.

I know this is only gonna be kids and triallists but was gonna pop down for it. Anyone else going down to it?

Match Report

Mon Aug 06, 2007 11:12 pm

Friendly played at Damson Park

Solihull Moors 0 3 Walsall Reserves

Walsall (4-4-2)

Bertrand Bossu

Richard Taundry
Mannie Smith
Ian Roper
Netan Sansara

Alex Nicholls
Mark Bradley (Capt.)
David McDermott (Leon Quarless, 85 min.)
Jamie Silver (Charlton Davies, 63 min.)

Troy Deeney
Ishmel Demontagnac (Chris Hanna, 63 min.)

Unused Substitutes:-
Peter Doran
Harry Harris

Managers:- Eric McManus & Mick Halsall (Dicky Dosh watching from the stand)

Goal log:-
32 min. - 0-1 - Nicholls fails to connect cleanly with a left wing cross but Deeney follows up to slam the ball into the net.
43 min. - 0-2 - Deeney bursts through the middle to add another.
48 min. - 0-3 - Ishy, with a lovely touch on the ball, puts Silver clear only for him to be wrestled to the ground. Ishy then demonstrates the perfect penalty-kick - hard and low to the 'keeper's left.

Comments:-
We should have had a penalty in 23rd min when Nicholls was sent sprawling. The assistant referee signalled the clear penalty but the referee, much further away, gave a free-kick, outside the area. Chicken!!!
Defence - a few "hairy" moments, early on, but generally in control. I am a big Roper fan but, unfortunately, that's exactly what he is, right now - BIG! He needs to shed a few pounds to get back to his best. The other three were sound.
Midfield:- a bit cramped and frenetic but we had the edge.
Attack:- Deeney and Ishy were always a handful for the home defence and Hanna looked lively when he came on.

I think it looks like Zidann and Gerrard on Saturday against Carlisle

Youth team player but the official site describes him as a right back whereas Leamore' s report has him playing left wing/midfield. Part of his development a la Ishy?

Wants to become a fireman if he doesn't make it as a footballer

I would say that Deeney's continued goalscoring exploits must have him not far away from the first-team squad given that Carlos has failed to impress and has been forced to return to Portugal for a few days.

Thought I was gonna be the only one there after no-one replied to my post so went pen at the ready to do a match report - should have known Leamore would be there!

Anyway, I'll still give my thoughts, most of which agrees with Leamore's excellent summary.

Bossu: After a less than secure opening 15 mins from the team, he didn't have a lot to do other than field a couple of free kicks and distribute. Kicked okay, but punched a lot considering he should be tall enough to catch above everyone!

Taundry: Did okay, pretty solid and made one or two good covering tackles. Had to face Moors' impressive tricky left winger and coped well overall

Sansara: Okay going forward, occasional wasted pass, a bit caught out defensively at times.

Smith: Solid and didn't really put a foot wrong, continues to develop well.

Roper: dodgy start, got caught out early on, quite worryingly, when Moors had their best spell. As we got a grip on the game he settled down and did the normal Roper stuff such well, e.g. strong in the air and heading clear. As Leamore said, he looks unfit still, a touch overweight and needs more games before he is ready for League 1 football.

Nicholls: Used his pace well, got up and down and linked up with people well, not used enough I felt.

Bradley: Dodgy start (his mistake almost lead to a goal for them in the first minute) but during the game he came on a lot better, controlled, passed and linked up with others well, impressed overall.

McDermott: Similar start to Bradley but came on well too. Used trickery and pace well, passed and linked with Bradley well. Had one incident where he wriggled out from the corner, despite having his shirt almost ripped off, got past three and started an attack - Ishy probably would have stopped and had a swing!!

Silver: How small is he?? He makes McDermott look big!! Started slow but got into the game more, pacey and tricky and made some good runs.

Deeney: Very good overall. Constantly held the ball up, laid off to others and headed knock downs to others accurately. Linked up with Ishy well, took his goals well and worked hard. Had one incident where he didn't get a penalty, so roared into their full back - Dicky shouted down from the stand to "take a big breath and calm down"!!

Ishy: Slow start but got into it a lot more. Their players never really coped with him, beat them regularly and linked up well. Still would rather see him as a winger than in a central role.

Subs:
Hannah: Thought he did well and linked up with Deeney very well.
Davies: Comfortable in the middle, didn't really do a lot.
Quarless: Not a chance to make an impact really.

Overall quite a comfortable game, after the first 15-20 minutes. We controlled the game mainly after that. Moor's left winger gave the most problems to us, but I thought their big black centre half and midfielder did pretty well too.
Great to see the youngsters play well together and link up effectively. Biggest positives for me were seeing Deeney play a lot better than at Leeds last season - he could be a useful asset for us this season, as well as Bradley and McDermott play so well in the middle. I'd say McDermott was my man of the match overall. Still worry about his size though. If Bradley keeps doing well I can see him being close to a look in this season.

Finally, good to see Sonko there enjoying the game!!
