I did offer a lift on the other thread, but doubt I will be going via south Wales unless Saddler82 can't follow a map

A good run out with some very encouraging features.

My impressions.
Ince - rarely had to make a save, did what was required. No chance with the goal.
Wrack - fair, but nothing special.
Boertian - ok, not really tested by Stafford.
Roper - solid
Gerrard - ok.
Sonner - as expected
Dobson - as expected
Hall - clever on the ball, good presence
Mooney - three goals - apart from the hat trick what did he do? :) :?
Butler - like last season
Fox - played like a spare fullback in midfield.

Subs:
Ishmel - good in patches; needs more games.
Dann - excellent; showed that he is clearly our best centre half.
Carneiro - imagine Zigor playing centre forward and you get the idea.
16 was it Pedro or Sonko? - speed and skill. Just the sort of player I like. Probably won't be seeing much more of him then. :?

Don't care if he does handstands, climbs the goalposts and kisses my girlfriend as long as he gets a hat trick every game!

The Left Back was half decent. But i like a defender with a bit of something about him. Our man today looked a bit flimsy.

Mooney nice touches, good link up play, but he hasn't got great energy levels which we like from strikers. Then again he put that ball in the net 3 times. With him last season that title would have been ours way before Swindon.

Sonner - in my opinion he was imaculate. Looked up for it as well. Didn't waste the ball. Deano and Dobbo good at wasting it usually last season. Glad he is here.

The Sub who came on and played right wing - I am really really really hoping this guy is signed. Ive seen enough of him tonight to see he can play. He has energy. He can go past people and is a creative force. He is also a thinker. Not a get me head down and lets see where i end up type of winger. I like.

Caniero - I was hoping to go home thinking Jorge or Boli, but ive got him thinking Larrossa and Cederquist. Will give him time though he has a good touch.

Fox fish out of water in midfield. But he is mildly effective. Butler no change there. Ropes, Dann and Gerrard nothing new.

Wracky used at Full Back. Ive never minded him filling in there. Left or Right Back he does a decent job.

If said bloke is Mario Pedro, according to Hednesford fans he was excellent for them last pre-season, got a contract and disappeared off the radar, I think he needs a couple more outings before definitive judgments are made.

Two that stuck out for me were sonko, had some great touches and showed some skill, and actuly did something with the ball, very usefull down the right side.

and the man with no name playing at left back. seemed to tackle quite strongly for a little fella and got forward really well, nearly scoreing

I think carlos had some great touches but just need a whole game, he also looked very effective. but i couldnt get over how this woman behind me just kept moaning and moaning about pall hall to kick it,, kept shouting KICK IT KICK IT before he got the ball.

Thought the left back did well, If it was Sonko on the wing, very impressed.

Thought Wrack put the effort in last night to be fair and the 3 centre backs in rotation looked pretty solid.

Butler is my sticking point, on last nights performance it was "more of the same" whereas I thought Mooney looked lively (for an old man)

Im glad to see Sonko played much better last night. He showed glimpses of it at Worcester but never really had much of the ball. Was is crossing better last night?

Im impressed that Paul Boertien played. He is a brilliant defender and if he is over his injuries we have a quality left back.

What, you mean tireless running, effort, and committment. Shocking.

I wasnt there (although I was on Sunday). Apparently last night, Butler won a penalty, which Mooney converted, and the keeper saved a shot of Butlers (that was going in), pushing it into Mooney's path, which Mooney scored.

So, he directly assisted the (two!) goals which got us to win the match, and you're not happy with his performance?

Mooney a hat trick? Are my eyes deceiving me? How can a geriatric snail paced player get in the position to score three goals?

I heard it was was a perfect hat trick, one left foot, one right foot and one off his walking frame?

Wow...I have an opinion... Shocking. I'd hardly say last night was "Tireless running and commitment" but then again it was pre-season and hopefully we can get another forward in to keep him on his toes.

Last season, watching MOST of the matches home and away I got the feeling he was in a "Comfort" zone for much of the time.

Message boards would be pointless without opinions, so plaese dont make the assumption that I dont think you should express yours -I am just questioning it, based on the facts that you said Butler was a sticking point for you after watching him last night, but he assisted two goals.

For the record, I also watched most of the matches home and away, and if you think a striker who isnt scoring freely is happy, or in a comfort zone, you're sadly mistaken.

Yay, you both fell for it so I can reply with my planned, it doesn't matter who you're playing against, scoring goals is an art of being in the right place at the right time and being composed enough to finish.

Age, pace doesn't matter. It's something you can teach very easily or quickly to the likes of pacy, but vastly inexperienced Spencer Weir Daley.

Once again phil or anyone else, could you please tell me why Larossa not being picked by Merson is a statement that he wasn't good enough. He proved in every pre-season game he was yet I don't think was given one start under Merson and certainly not a run in the team so how can you quantify how good he was just because he didn't play?

The moaners amaze me.

Had we lost to Stafford Rangers and had Mooney had a stinker it would have been moan moan moan like the world is about to end.

Yes pre-season friendlies are completely meaningless in terms of results.

However, it is hugely encouraging to read that the club are looking at some impressive trialists, and that certain individuals whose capabilities have been questioned are looking fit and sharp.

That IS what pre-season is about. Might I also add its great to see Scott Dann, Ian Roper, Darren Wrack, and Nicholls back in the swing of things with no reaction. Like having 4 new players.

Definatly a matter of opinions, I have mine, you have yours. I just hope the extra competition from Carlos and Sonko along with Hall who also can play in that role will keep him on his toes.

BTW, You say I am entitled to an opinion and then turn around and tell me it's "Shocking" and "I'm sadly mistaken",

I'm glad to to report from speaking to other people over close season that I am not the only one to have a "Shocking" point of view.

Hopefully though I will be "Mistaken" and we will see the best from Martin this coming season.

His positioning on that first goal was a corker wasn't it, the way he hung backk from the penalty spot to hammer it home... Only the nous and experience of a wild old veteran would have told him to take that position up.

Yes, work is quiet today.

I think Mooney is gonna pick up those blocked and parried chances all season. What we were missing last season is when Butler managed to pick up the ball get into a shooting position only for his shot to be blocked and there would be no-one to follow it up because Butler was up front alone a lot of times.
