Couldn't believe what I was hearing walking down Bescot Crescent at the end of the game- the bloke in front of me remarked to his mate "They haven't convinced me they're promotion contenders yet."
Mid-table basement division Torquay were Ronseal- tryers, did the simple things well enough, yet ultimately zero creativity or quality, and after we struggled to get started, it was always going to be a case of a game played at their level rather than ours. Indeed, at half time, for the first time at Bescot this season, it truly felt like we were watching forth division football. I spent the last ten minutes of the half hoping that we wouldn't boo them off, and most of my fellow Saddlers didn't disappoint me (kudos to the geezer in the upper FTG who was quick to remind the jeering contingent of "last season".).
There were positives to be taken- Westwood started well, but after getting booked, was very shaky- when their number 7 (I spent the break thinking what good foil for Butler he'd make) did him for "pace" just before half time, the writing was pretty much on the wall; Scott Dann came out for the second half, and the back four seemed to collectively grow in stature as a result, particularly Pead, who had a very erratic first half, but his second half run & cross was, goal aside, the highlight of the game.
Wrack looked energised & interested- I was of the opinion that, post-30th birthday & after a 12 month lay off, he'd be a spent force, but today he showed that he's still got a part to play. When he moved up alongside Butler and the ball was played into the channels marked the first time in recent memory I can recall one of our front two getting into a central position. Familiarity was obviously a problem (he & MB got in each other's way on at least one occassion), and he understandably ran out of steam towards the end, but very encouraging nonetheless.
This game emphatically answered one question, for me: Fox in front of Taylor is right combination on the left; they are our first real wide "partnership" since Zigor & Pedro. During the first half, Wrack was constantly looking to come inside, whereas Fox offered us a much better outlet once he was pushed up field, and got into a couple of good positions towards the end (Butler could use a goal right now, so why oh why didn't he square the ball when he'd drawn the keeper out? Also, he the same comination combined well a couple of minutes later, forcing their keeper into a decent save).
Overall.... not promotion contenders?? I'm baffled- two games, two below par team performances, four points gained and no goals conceded. If that last sentence doesn't describe a team that's going to be in contention, I honestly don't know what does.
